Obituary for Byron W. Mead

Byron W. Mead, 80, of Fredonia, N.Y., died Saturday February 11, 2023 at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Byron was born in Dunkirk May 14, 1942 to Stephen and Marion Slawson Mead. He attended Silver Creek Schools and then enlisted in the United States Navy, where he was stationed in San Diego, CA. Upon his Honorable Discharge from the Navy he attended and graduated from the Dunkirk Technical School. On June 25, 1966 Byron married Katharine “Kitty” Clark Mead. The couple had been married 56 years at the time of his passing. He worked at Main Motors in Sheridan. In 1974 he and his wife, Kitty, purchased Fredonia Glass Service, now operated by his sons, Michael and William Mead. Byron enjoyed working on his 1964 Dodge and fishing. He was a member of Kiwanis Club, Beaver Club, the Fredonia Fire Department and a faithful member of the Fredonia First United Methodist Church.

Byron is survived by: his wife, Kitty Mead, of Fredonia; sons: Michael (Pattie) Mead of Dunkirk and William “Will” (Melissa) Mead, of Fredonia; grandchildren: Brennan Mead of Dunkirk, Michaela, Alexis and Stephen Mead, all of Fredonia; a brother, Roger (Janet) Mead of Effingham, IL; a sister-in-law, Carol Mead of Haines City. FL; nephews: Stephen (Laurie) Mead of Forestville and Philip (Tonyea) Mead of Lewes, DE; nieces: Cindy Flaherty of Cassadaga and Philena Mead of Indianapolis, IN: also a cousin, Marilyn Slawson of KS.

Besides his parents, Stephen and Marion Mead, Byron is predeceased by a brother Lewis Mead; cousins: Richard Slawson and Carol Miller; and close friend, Jeff Marsh.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7pm at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home,
20 Central Avenue, Fredonia. Funeral services will be held Thursday 11am at the Fredonia First United Methodist Church, 25 Church Street, Fredonia, Thursday 11am.
