Obituary for Caroline Julia Ludwig (Nebrich)
Caroline J. Ludwig, 93 of Webster Road, Fredonia, died Thursday, February 17, 2022 after a brief illness. She was born in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of the late Sylvester J. and Martina A. (Daemeke) Nebrich on October 14, 1928.
Caroline grew up on Dodge St. in Buffalo NY. She graduated from Mt. St. Joseph’s Academy in 1946. On May 30, 1953 she married her late husband of 50 years, Edward G. Ludwig, at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. Together they raised 7 children. When her children were young Caroline was an active 4H leader. Later she was honored as a Volunteer Grandparent with Chautauqua County Head Start for over 25 years of service. Caroline spent much of her life in service to others including being a docent with her husband Ed at the Buffalo Zoo.
Caroline was a devoted Catholic serving in multiple capacities at St. Anthony’s Parish including: Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion for the homebound, teaching religious education and a former member of the Women’s Guild. As a member of St Anthony’s prayer chain, she prayed daily for the needs of others. She was devoted to the works of Mother Teresa and believed in” Doing small things with great love.”
She was an avid bird watcher and gardener. Her greatest pleasure was spending time with her family, especially her 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
She is survived by: her 7 children: Kathryn (William) Probst of Westfield, NY, Carol Ludwig (James O’Rourke) of Dunkirk, NY, Peter Ludwig of Jamestown, NY, Dolores Karlson-Bauza (Hector Bauza) of Lancaster, SC, John (Lori) Ludwig of Fredonia, NY, James Ludwig (Thomas J. Elston) of Seattle, WA and Andrew Ludwig (Kara Christina) of Fredonia, NY; two sisters: Catherine Innes and Mary (Dave) Gowdy ; grandchildren: Kerry Hoffman, Erin Hellwig, Brian O’Rourke, Benjamin Probst, Elizabeth Bandinelli, Michelle Karlson Story, Kristine Karlson-Chestnut, Matthew Ludwig, Rachel Ludwig, John Ludwig, Emily Ludwig, Diana Ludwig, Owen Ludwig.
In addition to her husband, Caroline was preceded in death by her 3 sisters: Sylvia Nebrich, Teresa Allen, Zita Antholzner and 2 brothers: John Nebrich and Joseph Nebrich; grandson, Sean O’Rourke and daughter-in-law, Georgia Ludwig.
Visitation is Tuesday 2/22/2022, from 2-7 PM at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, (Corner of Cushing & Orchard Streets, Fredonia) Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at 11:00AM.
