Obituary for Carter Rowland

Dr. J. Carter Rowland, of Fredonia, N.Y., Born March 13, 1926, he passed away peacefully on January 26, 2021. Carter was raised in Warren, Pennsylvania and upon graduating from high school at 17, he volunteered into the army, serving in the Third Infantry during World War II. While serving his country in Italy and France, he received two Purple Hearts. With the help of the GI Bill, Carter earned his undergraduate degree from Gannon University, his Master of Arts in English from Penn State in 1951, and his doctorate from Western Reserve University in 1958.

Dr. Rowland joined the faculty of Gannon University. In 1965, he received a Fulbright Award and taught at the University Amman, Jordan and University of Beirut, Lebanon during that scholastic year. From 1967 to 1971, he was chairman of the Gannon University English department. Additionally, he was the first faculty advisor and proud charter member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. He continued his career as chairman of the Fredonia State English department and then the Vice President of Academic Affairs from 1971 to 1986. Additionally, he served as the SUNY Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies in 1986.

Upon retirement, Carter had the honor and pleasure of working as an advisor to for the National World War ll Memorial in Washington DC. Dr. Rowland also served as a member of the Chautauqua County Board of Ethics, the Jazz Erie Board, a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, and as active member of the Saint Vincent DePaul Society. Carter was a lifelong Catholic and the beloved husband of Wilda “Boo” Rowland for 75 years; loving father of Mark Rowland (Peg), Cindy Vento (Mario), Kirk Rowland, Lisa Zwart (Mike); and dear grandfather of 9 and great grandfather of 6.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Church, Dunkirk, NY Saturday July 10 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in his memory to: Your local Special Olympics program or Special Olympics USA:
