Obituary for Gary A. Maycock

Gary A. Maycock, 61, from Cassadaga, NY, passed away on Monday, January 10, 2022 at UPMC in Jamestown, NY, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Erie, PA on December 19, 1960 to Gerald B. Maycock and Barbara A. Shalkowski. Gary attended Cardinal Mindszenty High School participating in football, basketball and track.  He was a member of the last graduating class in 1979.
Gary was an excellent auto mechanic working at various jobs in the Dunkirk area.  He spent 24 years at Fredonia State in Facilities Services before retiring in 2017.  In his early years Gary could be found at the local drag strips with his family watching his dad in action.  He and his brother Mike raced together and won the track points championship at Lancaster in 1999.  Gary also supported his brother Jay’s winning racing efforts with his mechanical expertise.  He attended the annual National Drag races in Indianapolis as well as local car shows.  He spent the last few years working to restore his father’s ’71 Plymouth Duster. Gary was an avid deer hunter in both bow and gun, who routinely shot many trophy bucks.  He also loved traveling out west to hike and hunt, with Wyoming and Montana being two of his favorite destinations.  Gary was a big dog lover spending many days walking in the woods or traveling with his German shepherd.  But it was his beloved yellow Labrador “Dakota” that he had a very special bond with and was his loyal and spoiled companion during these past 4 years.
Being an uncle was one of the greatest joys for Gary.  He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews and attending their various sporting events.  He especially enjoyed being with his great nieces and nephews who held a very special place in his heart.
Gary will always be remembered as a loving and supporting son, a hard-working individual that could be a bit stubborn, but was always there for his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his father Gerald B. Maycock, mother Barbara A. Shalkowski and step-father Alfred Shalkowski.
Gary is survived by his siblings: Tracy (Jon) Wysong of Fredonia, NY., Gerald “Jay” (Amy) Maycock of Jamestown, NY., Michael (Robin) Maycock of Kennedy, NY. and Patricia (David) Jackson of Littleton, MA.  Nieces and Nephews Sean and Ryan Wysong, Michael (Catie) Maycock, Marah (Josh) Micek, Mitchell and Mckenna Maycock and April, Bradley and Matthew Jackson.  Great nieces and nephew Dawson and Kyra Maycock and Mia Micek. Visitation will be held Friday from 4-7pm at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, NY, where funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 am.
