Obituary for George C. Tadt Jr.

George C. Tadt Jr., 95, of Fredonia, N.Y., passed away suddenly on Sunday October 16, 2022. He was born July 5, 1927 to Georgine (Moir) and George C. Tadt Sr. George graduated from Fredonia High School, Class of 1945. A United States Army Veteran, he served from August 1945 to December 1946. George earned a WWII Victory Medal as he was stationed overseas in Tedworth, England as a Clerk General. On July 11, 1949 George married the former Alberta Blodgett.
The couple was married 63 years at the time of Alberta’s passing on April 9, 2013.

George was a U.S. Postal Carrier working out of Fredonia Post Office until his retirement in 1985 with 41 years of service. He was active in fire service at various levels. He was a member of the Fredonia Fire Dept. for 72 years, where he was a Past Fire Chief; he was former member of the Chautauqua Fire Advisory Board, having also served as a Past President of the Chautauqua County Fire Chiefs Association. He served as the Village of Fredonia Civil Defense Director and for many years on the Fredonia-Pomfret Recreation Commission. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers for over 70 years, a member of the Forest Lodge No.166 F. & A. M. for over 68 years, a member of the Fredonia Memorial American Legion Post 59 for over 75 years and for many years marched and played the bugle in the Drum & Bugle Corp. George was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of Fredonia.

He was an avid scrabble player and follower of the “Oak Island” series on TV, loved genealogy and history in general. George traveled with his family to Florida and loved Walt Disney World. Being the patriarch of the family, George was totally committed to so many aspects of his children and grandchildren’s lives and attended as many events he could, even in recent years.

George is survived by: his son, Jeffrey (Janna) Tadt; 3 daughters: Karen (Jenness) Merrill, Nancy (Kirk) Miller and Julie (Douglas) Essek; grandchildren: Justin, Ben (Louise) and Brian Tadt, Rebecca and Rachelle Hija, David Warren, Chelsey (Ben) Merrill, Cliff, Nicholas, Christopher and Victoria Miller, Cody Essek, Adam Essek (Sydney Swan) and Cassandra Essek (Tyler Bayles); one great-grandson, David Tadt, sisters-in-law: Linda Blodgett, Carol (John II) Walker, Janet (Tony) Kapuscinski and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his wife, Alberta Blodgett Tadt; parents: George and Georgine Moir Tadt; a brother, Robert and sister-in-law Margaret “Peg” Tadt; father- in-law Elbert and mother-in-law Flossie Blodgett.

The family would like to thank the many assisted living facility caregivers who cared for our father over the past few years, specifically at the WCA Home and Fredonia Place.

Calling hours will be Thursday 7-9 pm and Friday 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, N.Y. A Masonic service, under the auspices of the Forest Lodge No. 166 F. & A.M. will be Friday October 21 at 7:30 pm at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held 10am Saturday, October 22 at the Harvest Chapel Free Methodist Church, 39 Matteson St, Fredonia, NY. Military Honors will be offered by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council. The funeral service will be lived streamed on George’s site on the Larson Timko Funeral Home web site, larsontimkofuneralhome.com starting on Saturday at 9:45 am with the service commencing at 10 am.
