Obituary for Gregory Paul "Greg" Barnes

Gregory Paul “Greg” Barnes, passed away on October 31st, 2022 in Fredonia, N.Y. at the age of 57. Greg was the son of Charles (deceased) and Sharon Barnes (Delcamp) of Fredonia, N. Y. Brother to Tara Ley (Jeff Nelson) of Fredonia, N.Y. and Shannon Smoot (Jason) of Lakewood Ohio. He was also the uncle to Weston, Emma and Olivia Ley as well as Max, Adeline, Quinn, Sam and James Smoot.
Greg came into this world on May 25th, 1965, on the same day as one of the most noted fights in American history took place. It was when Mohammad Ali knocked out Sonny Liston in the 1st round to take the Heavy Weight Title. Little did we know that this fight would have represented the life that Greg had known.
In Greg’s younger years he spent a great deal of time with his Grandparents Merle and Florence Delcamp. Greg was particularly fond of his grandfather, so much so that he continued his love for fixing and tinkering with cars and other mechanical entities. As he was growing up, Greg took on a paper route at a very young age befriending much of the neighborhood, especially the elderly. He always had a way to make them feel special by taking the time to talk and get to know them.
After graduating from Fredonia High School in 1983, Greg worked with his father and Uncle Bill Barnes as a painting contractor. Although he explored other career paths and lived in a few different locations, Greg found himself to have a knack for painting and ultimately did this most of his life. Greg enjoyed skiing, fishing, boating, and collecting just about everything. Also, what many did not know about Greg, was that he was a very sentimental and spiritual person.
Unfortunately, Greg began slipping away shortly after high school. Despite the many years battling to live a substance free life, Greg could no longer fight the battle.
We are thankful that today Greg is a place where he no longer has to fight. A place of peace and a place where he can see and love the person that he truly is and the person we once knew.
Visitation will be Saturday from 2-4pm at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia. On-line condolences may be made at larsontimkofuneralhome.com. Arrangements by David J. Dengler.
