Obituary for Marian B. Carlson (Brumm)

Marian (Brumm) Carlson of Van Buren, NY, died Thursday August 5, 2021 at home. She was born at home in Fredonia nm May 8, 1923, the daughter of Clyde C.W. and Iona (Kewley) Brumm. Marian was the wife of Robert W. Carlson, who passed away February 15, 1994. The couple was married 64 years at the time of Roberts passing. She is the mother of John R. Carlson and Peter W. Carlson; grandmother of Lisa, Krista, Brian and Eric; great-grandmother of Ayden. Besides her parents, her husband Robert, Marian is predeceased by her older brother Clyde C.W. Brumm.

Marian attended Fredonia Normal Training School, grades k-8, and graduated from Fredonia High School, class of 1940. She earned a B.S from Fredonia in 1944 and her M.S. from Buffalo State 1980. She taught 6 years for the Rochester, New York public schools, 19 years Special Ed. for Chautauqua BOCES and retired in 1985, as did her husband, Robert. Together they traveled during spring school recesses to: Hawaii, United Kingdom, France, Germany, The Netherlands and Austria-Hungary. Marian was involved in many community activities. She served as an officer in the following organizations: Chautauqua County BOCES Teachers Assoc., Northern Chautauqua County Retired Teachers Assoc., 10 years on the WCA Home Board of Directors, Friends of Barker Library, Fredonia Garden Club, and Fredonia Shakespeare Club. She was also an active member of: Benjamin Prescott D.A.R., AAUW, and a Charter Member of the Antique Interest Group. Marian also evaluated and tutored for 10 years with Literacy Volunteers and also volunteered with the following groups: D.R. Barker Library Children’s Program, Fredonia Pomfret Youth Board and Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels. Marian was a member of The First Church Christ Scientists of Boston, MA. since 1952. From 1946 to early 1960’s Marian assisted her mother, Iona K. Brumm, and husband, Robert, in the seasonal operation of the popular summer vacation spot, the Van Buren Lodge. After discontinuance of the operation Marian and Robert made the Lodge their home and shortly after they made a part of the upper level into three, year round, rental apartments. Marian maintained lovely summer gardens to her great enjoyment and to the appreciation and enjoyment of summer residents of Van Buren Bay and Point as they walked by.
