Mary Ann Metro of Fredonia, New York, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2023. She was born at home on Bull Road, now Concord Drive, in the outskirts of Fredonia on February 26, 1944 to James J. and Frances A. (Lysczewski) Burlett.
She attended Rural Pomfret #5 Country School until its closing. Then she attended Fredonia Central School, graduating in 1961, and the State University of Fredonia where she earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees. Mary Ann taught in Jamestown, Cassadaga, and Fredonia Schools for a total of 33 years. Upon her retirement in 1998, she was appointed Clinical Field Supervisor and Associate Faculty in the Center for Educational Studies at SUNY Fredonia. Her memberships included New York State United Teachers, the American Federation of Teachers, Fredonia Teachers’ Association, Parent Teachers’ Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Beta Chapter, Bud and Bloom Garden Club, and Wheelock School’s Retired Teachers’ Club. Mary Ann had many hobbies, including needle work, sewing, cooking, reading, and travel, both in the United States and abroad. Some of her favorite destinations were Alaska, the Black Sea in Bulgaria, Iceland, Sweden, and Budapest and Prague (where she traveled with the Classical Guitar Quartet from SUNY Fredonia).
She is survived by: her beloved daughter, Nicole Alexandria Metro (Damian Payton): precious grandson, Isaiah I. Okwumabua and namesake granddaughter, Mariana J. Payton; her brother, William F. Burlett; nieces, Monica Burlett and Amanda (Roger) Cooley; a nephew, Ryan (Jessica) Burlett; an aunt, Rosemarie (Dolly) Burlett and many great nieces and nephews and cousins.
Mary Ann was predeceased by: her parents, James J. and Frances A. (Lysczewski) Burlett: her brother, James R. Burlett; sister-in-law Beverly (Oakes) Burlett; a niece, Jeanette Burlett, great-niece Kimberly Nichols; and an uncle, Richard Burlett.
