Obituary for Ray Davis Jr.

Ray Davis, Jr., 99, of Dunkirk, N.Y. passed away June 20, 2021. Ray was born in Alvy, West Virginia to the late Olympia Coen and Ray Davis. After completing his 7th grade education, he was put to work for the local baker. At the age of 22, he was drafted into the United States Army. Ray was trained in basic training as a truck driver and a sharp shooter. Completing two terms, January 25, 1943 - December 21, 1945 and December 22, 1945 – November 39, 1946. He was part of the 204 MA Aircraft Battalion D. Ray stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1945. He shot down an ME 109 enemy plane earning 7 medals (4 being battle stars). He retired from the Army being One of the Bravest generation and a private first class. Ray returned to the United States to Fort Bliss Texas where he worked for the Railroad. He then made the move to Dunkirk, N.Y. where he was employed by Allegany Ludlum Steel for 33 years as a crane operator. After retirement he relocated to Oak Forest/ Waynesburg, Pennsylvania for 25 years with his companion Pauline Strope.
In 2017 Ray was involved in a car accident. It was then decided he would return back to Dunkirk so he could be cared for by family. He is survived by and resided with his daughter Erma (Robert) Rybij. Also survived by his grandchildren: Brandy Davis, Amanda (Michael) Campbell, Robert (Jessica Galloway) Rybij and Yvonne (Carlos) Medina all took part in his care and making memories. Ray enjoyed spending time with his great-grandchildren: Kori Durkin, Kendra (Felix) Garcia, Kylee Welka, Alexzander Bouquin and Brenden and Hallie Rybij. Ray is also survived by a daughter Patricia (David) Ryczko, five more grandchildren, five more great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Ray loved to play cards. He was well known for his “clean jokes” and riddles. Ray was a Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates fan. He also liked to test his luck chasing unicorns at the casinos.
There will be no calling hours or visitation. Ray will be laid into eternal rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Private military services will be held by the family at a later date.
